Nursing home manager charged with neglect, fraud

YCSD won't say whether Landrigan will also face charges in recent homicide at the facility

"Whistleblowers and family members filed reports with the Health Department alleging neglect, which were investigated in cooperation with the sheriff's department," said Yoknapatawpha County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Elizabeth Jones.

Jones declined to provide specifics on the alleged conduct that led to the charges, citing the ongoing investigation.

"We are still working with the Health Department to determine the extent of the neglect and fraud, but sufficient evidence has already been found to warrant today's arrest of Mr. Landrigan."

Landrigan, who has managed the Belk Boulevard extended care facility since 1999, was taken into custody at Yoknapatawpha Acres. Staff members expressed surprise at the arrest.

"I can't believe it," said nurse's aide LaDonna Kitterman. "I never thought anyone would ever take Mr. Landrigan to jail."

The arrest wasn't the first time the sheriff's department has been to the nursing home in the last month. On January 9, employee Jerry Shaw was found dead on the premises. An autopsy later determined his death was a homicide.

Jones would not comment on the status of the investigation into Shaw's death except to say that it is active.

"Detectives are pursuing several leads and are optimistic that they will arrest the culprit or culprits very soon."

Meanwhile, the residents at Yoknapatawpha Acres are adjusting to the changes.

"This is the most excitement we've had around here in I don't know when," Bill Rogers said. "Maybe things are looking up."
