Sharon Hathaway interview #2

Tuesday, March 9, 2021 – 8:15 a.m.

Sharon Hathaway is Vincent Gayle's live-in girlfriend.

Detectives Beckwith and Magee asked her to come back into the Yoknapatawpha County Sheriff's Department to answer a few more questions.

Participants:

  • Detective P. Beckwith
  • Detective J. Magee
  • Sharon Hathaway

Detective Magee: Thank you for coming in, Ms. Hathaway. Can you please state your name and address for the record?

Sharon Hathaway: Yes. My name is Sharon Hathaway. My address is 3 County Road 169 in Alesville.

Detective Beckwith: We have some more questions for you about Daniel Collier, specifically about his travel plans. How did Daniel get to New York?

Sharon Hathaway: He drove there in his car.

Detective Beckwith: Are you sure about that?

Sharon Hathaway: Well, we saw him drive away in his car when he left, so I assume he drove there. A while back, I think he was thinking about flying, but I guess he decided not to.

Detective Magee: How do you know he was thinking about flying?

Sharon Hathaway: I overheard him saying something to Brandon about it.

Detective Beckwith: When?

Sharon Hathaway: After Christmas.

Detective Magee: Where were they?

Sharon Hathaway: When Brandon came over, they'd usually hang out in the garage, working on a car or one of Daniel's art pieces. That's what they were doing just after Christmas. I came home from exchanging some Christmas gifts at LuLu's downtown, and Daniel was painting a bunch of car parts.

Detective Beckwith: Car parts?

Sharon Hathaway: Yeah. That's what they looked like.

Detective Beckwith: What kind of car parts?

Sharon Hathaway: I don't know anything about cars. Stuff that looks like it goes under the hood?

Detective Magee: So you come home, and Dan said he was considering flying instead of driving?

Sharon Hathaway: When I got out of the car, I jokingly told Dan that, with his art, I wouldn't have room for any of the cars. I can't remember specifically what he said back, but it was something like, ‘When I head to New York, you'll have a whole side of the garage free.' I laughed and said, if Vince had his way, Daniel's car would be up on blocks so that he couldn't go.

Detective Beckwith: What did Daniel say to that?

Sharon Hathaway: He scowled a bit, turned to Brandon, and said, "I guess I'd have to fly there then."

Detective Beckwith: What did you say?

Sharon Hathaway: I told him I was just picking on him, but I was hoping he wouldn't go to New York … either way.

Detective Magee: Is there any real possibility that he did decide to fly?

Sharon Hathaway: Sure, I guess so. Maybe he was just driving to the airport? He didn't take very much with him, so it's possible. Why do you ask? Did you find something out?

Detective Beckwith: So if we found Daniel's car parked at the Memphis airport, you wouldn't be surprised?

Sharon Hathaway: Did you? Okay, well, I guess he did fly then. But it's not like him to leave his car behind. What happened to it?

Detective Beckwith: So you don't know of any arrangements Daniel might've made regarding his car?

Sharon Hathaway: No, maybe Brandon was supposed to pick it up or something. I really don't know.

Detective Magee: Do you remember where you were on January 6th?

Sharon Hathaway: Well, let's see, Daniel left on the 2nd, which was a Saturday, so the 6th would've been … Wednesday? Hmm, nothing really. I think Vince and I just worked like usual.

Detective Magee: What about the week prior to that, after Daniel left?

Sharon Hathaway: Nothing, in particular. I work from home during the day. I have lunch with my friend Allison Kennedy every Tuesday at noon. Other than that, I just stayed home.

Detective Magee: And when's the last time you spoke to Daniel?

Sharon Hathaway: Like I told you guys last time, we haven't heard from him since he left.

Detective Magee: Before he left, where did he say he was going to be staying in New York?

Sharon Hathaway: Again, I don't really know. He said something about some artists that had a room for him. I'm sorry, I wish I could tell you more.

Detective Beckwith: What do you know about Daniel's uncle, Rodney?

Sharon Hathaway: Not much. I know that he's not a very good guy, always trying to scam his family and only turns up when he needs something. What's he got to do with this?

Detective Beckwith: Have you ever met him?

Sharon Hathaway: No, I haven't.

Detective Magee: Then how do you know if he's a "good guy" or not?

Sharon Hathaway: Well, Vince said Rod was, in Vince's words, "a piece of work." Vince said Rod's own family thought he was no good. Disowned him or something.

Detective Beckwith: Do you know if Daniel has been in contact with Rodney?

Sharon Hathaway: I don't think Daniel has seen Rod in years, since his grandma died. Rod was living with her, and Daniel would go visit sometimes, but I haven't heard anything more about him since then.

Detective Magee: All right, Ms. Hathaway. Thanks for your time.

Sharon Hathaway: Of course.
