Letter to Immaculata Girls Home

When an anonymous woman left Doris Hammack at the Immaculata Girls Home in Detroit, Michigan, on August 23, 1960, five‑year‑old Doris had only a letter and a few meager possessions with her.

The following is the text of that letter, presumably written by the unknown woman who abandoned her.

Dear Sisters,

Please look after Doris as she has no one else in the world. Her mother and father are both dead. She has no living relations. I have no way to take her in.

She is a good child and will surely give you no trouble. She were born in North Mississippi in 1955. She is 5 years old. That is all I know.

Bless you,

A Friend
