Canvass – Campus Walk apartments
On Monday, August 28, 2023, the Yoknapatawpha County Sheriff's Department visited the Campus Walk apartment complex at 410 Hathorn Road, where they canvassed the residents looking for anyone who saw or heard anything on the night Kristi Waterson died, Saturday, August 26, 2023.
The interviews summarized are some of the most typical or relevant to the investigation and are representative of all interviews conducted.
Brady
Joe Brady
Apt: Bldg. 110, Apt #D
Age: 24
Occupation: Student
Mr. Brady said when he took his dog out for a walk between 7:45 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on the night of August 26, 2023, he noticed a white male, tall and medium build in his early 20s, walking through the apartment complex parking lot headed in a generally southeasterly direction.
Brady said he noticed the man because he rarely sees pedestrians in the area as most Campus Walk residents drive wherever they need to go.
Brady said the man wore khaki pants, a blue long-sleeve shirt, and a baseball cap. Brady described the man as having short, light brown hair but no beard, mustache, or distinguishing facial features.
Fernandez
Ricky Fernandez
Apt: Bldg. 110, Apt #C
Age: 20
Occupation: Student
Mr. Fernandez said he was outdoors in the apartment complex in the early morning hours of August 27, 2023, when he observed a white male of college age carrying a large gym bag walking through the complex parking lot in a generally northerly direction at approximately 1:30 a.m.
Fernandez described the individual as having a medium but not athletic build with short hair and no facial hair. He said the man had on tan pants, a long-sleeved, collared shirt, and a baseball cap worn with the bill in the front. Fernandez said there was some kind of lettering on the front of the baseball cap, but it was too dark for him to read it.
Murphy
Kristen Murphy
Apt: Bldg. 116, Apt #A
Age: 20
Occupation: Student
Ms. Murphy said she was grilling hamburgers at approximately 7:55 p.m. when she noticed a college-aged white male, tall and of medium build, walking through the apartment complex parking lot, headed in a southeastern direction.
Murphy said the man wore light-colored pants, a blue shirt, and a baseball cap and was carrying a black duffel bag or overnight bag. She said he was also wearing a canvass belt, which she noticed because it appeared to be too big, so a long section of the belt was dangling from his waist. She said the man was clean-shaven and had no distinguishing facial characteristics but might have been attractive.
Murphy said the man was not acting suspiciously but appeared to be walking with a definite purpose, and only after she heard about Kristi Waterson's death did Murphy think his presence might have any significance.
Young
Rebecca Young
Apt: Bldg. 112, Apt #B
Age: 24
Occupation: Student
Ms. Young said she was studying late on the night of August 26, 2023. At 1:20 a.m. on August 27, 2023, during a break from her studies, she saw a tall, college-aged white male of medium build walking through the apartment complex parking lot in a generally northeasterly direction.
Young said the man was walking quickly and purposefully, but she did not see where the man came from or where he went after he exited the complex parking lot.
She described the man as wearing light pants, a medium-colored shirt, and a baseball cap with what looked like Greek lettering, but she could not see the individual Greek letters. She could not recall the man's hair color or facial characteristics but did not remember seeing any significant facial hair.
