SKG Fraternity Canvass

YCSD investigators interviewed members of Sigma Kappa Gamma fraternity, where Carter Nichols is a member, about their knowledge of Carter Nichols' whereabouts on the night of October 15, 2022, and the early morning hours of October 16, 2022.

The interviews summarized are some of the most typical or relevant to the investigation and are representative of all interviews conducted.

Barnhardt

Name: Michael Barnhardt
Class / Hometown: Sophomore / Roanoke, VA

Mr. Barnhardt claimed Carter Nichols is a jerk, but not much more than that. "He's all talk and hot air. He's not half as bad as he wants you to think. He's just a prankster and a blowhard, nothing beyond that. You get him alone, where he doesn't feel the need to brag for the group, and he can actually be okay."

Barnhardt said he knew nothing about Carter Nichols' whereabouts or comings and goings at the fraternity party the night of the murder. When pressed, Barnhardt admitted to being completely smashed that night and said he didn't have any recollections after "that shot of Jäger around nine o'clock."

Drevey

Name: Hunter Drevey
Class / Hometown: Sophomore / Jackson, MS

Mr. Drevey was interviewed previously by the Sheriff's Department and made it plain that he didn't like Carter Nichols. Drevey described Nichols as a spoiled brat, selfish, arrogant, and lazy. When pushed to elaborate on Nichols' character, Drevey said, "I wouldn't put anything past him. If there is a limit to what he would do, it's only because of laziness. Not because of anything else. He thinks he can do whatever he wants."

Drevey confirmed that Nichols attended the party on the night of October 15th but could not say how long Nichols was there or when he might have left. "I left around 12:30 a.m. to take my girlfriend for something to eat, and then we went back to her apartment. Carter was still at the house when I left, but I don't know anything after that."

Hale

Name: Lucas Hale
Class / Hometown: Junior / Pascagoula, MS

Mr. Hale remembered Carter Nichols talking about wanting to go to a "late night" out in College Hill after everyone left the frat house.

"Some girl he was interested in was supposedly going to be there. I guess this was about 1:30 a.m. or so when he was talking about it. But no one seemed all that interested. I wandered off and started talking to this girl in my history class. I don't know what happened to Carter, but I did hear that no one went to any late night."

Hambeck

Name: Steve Hambek
Class / Hometown: Junior / Madison, MS

Mr. Hambek said he did remember Carter Nichols being at the party because he did a shot with him around 10:00 p.m. However, he could not be more specific than that. He said he moved outside to the deck so he could talk to some girls and lost track of Nichols and didn't see him again.

Wrenn

Name: Chris Wrenn
Class / Hometown: Junior / Jonesboro, AR

Mr. Wrenn said he wasn't at the party the night of October 15th because he had gone home to visit his girlfriend.

However, he confirmed what others have said about Carter Nichols just dating around, sort of playing the field. Wrenn said Nichols definitely didn't have a girlfriend. Wrenn seemed to think Nichols was okay, although "he's got a big mouth."
