Erin Bailey interview

Friday, September 13, 2024 – 3:45 p.m.

Erin Bailey is a nurse at the Yoknapatawpha Acres nursing home, where Jerry Shaw was employed.

Detectives Armstrong and Murphy interviewed her at the Yoknapatawpha County Sheriff's Department.

Participants:

  • Detective T. Armstrong
  • Detective S. Murphy
  • Erin Bailey

Detective Armstrong: Good afternoon. Would you please state your name and address for the record?

Erin Bailey: Yes, I would. My name is Erin Bailey, and I live with my parents at 712 S. 18th Street, Oxford.

Detective Armstrong: And you work at Yoknapatawpha Acres?

Erin Bailey: Yes, I'm a nurse.

Detective Murphy: Did you work with Jerry Shaw?

Erin Bailey: Yes, I did. It is so sad that such a sweet guy died like that. I still expected to see him today when I got to work, and then I remembered that he's… gone.

Detective Armstrong: You say he was sweet?

Erin Bailey: Yes, Jerry was a very nice man. He always brought me candy. Once, he even picked me some daffodils.

Detective Murphy: Did you two date?

Erin Bailey: Oh, no. He never asked me. I would have. I thought he was adorable. I think he would've asked me out eventually. He just had to work up the nerve.

Detective Armstrong: Forgive me, but you don't seem like the type who would like a guy like Jerry with all his tattoos and everything.

Erin Bailey: You can't judge a book by its cover, detective. It's the same with people.

Detective Armstrong: Not everyone feels as warmly about Jerry as you do. Why do you think that is?

Erin Bailey: I don't know. I know Bernice always calls him a pig because of the way he talked to Sylvia. I think she was just jealous. Besides that, I don't think he flirted with Sylvia anyway. He was much too shy.

Detective Armstrong: Uh-huh. Do you know anyone who didn't feel Jerry was all that?

Erin Bailey: Well, like I said, Bernice. But also our manager, Mr. Landrigan, was always on Jerry. He was constantly nagging about this or that. It really upset Jerry. I could tell.

Detective Murphy: What kind of things did he nag about?

Erin Bailey: Jerry's duties. Once, I thought I heard him say something about when he would get paid back, but I'm not sure what that meant.

Detective Murphy: How did Jerry respond to this nagging?

Erin Bailey: Well, he didn't like it. Who would? One time, Jerry got so upset that he shoved Mr. Landrigan. Not hard, but you know.

Detective Murphy: What did Mr. Landrigan do?

Erin Bailey: He just looked at him for a minute, and then he walked away. After about seven or eight steps, he turned back and said, "If you ever do that again, there will be consequences." Then he turned and walked into his office. It was a real intense moment, for sure.

Detective Murphy: When did this happen?

Erin Bailey: I don't know. A couple weeks ago? Maybe a month?

Detective Armstrong: Did Jerry have words with anyone else?

Erin Bailey: Yes, last week, I heard Sylvia raise her voice while she was talking to Jerry. I have no idea what she said, but I remember it because she doesn't get upset easily.

Detective Armstrong: Anyone else?

Erin Bailey: Yes. Many times, I passed by Jerry and Matt—Matt is the guy who delivers oxygen to us—and they were arguing. I'm not sure what they were mad about, but I did hear them mention football stuff a lot.

Detective Armstrong: Like what?

Erin Bailey: I don't know, like "yards" and "catches" and things like that. That's football, right?

Detective Armstrong: Right.

Detective Murphy: Anyone else ever have words with Jerry?

Erin Bailey: That's all I know of. Like I said, Jerry was a sweet guy. It's so sad what happened to him.

Detective Armstrong: Thank you very much for coming in, Erin. You've been very informative.

Erin Bailey: You're very welcome. Am I free to go then?

Detective Murphy: Yes. Let us know if you think of anything else.

Erin Bailey: I will. See ya.
